At a time when people were being asked to isolate from one another, I saw them seek other types of connections. The coastline drew people to it. Its vastness providing safety and its ever changing face embraced everyone who engaged with it. Viewing this interaction from above accentuates how small each of us are in this world. The sheer space around the subjects reinforces the loneliness felt by many.
The ever changing coastline seems ironically to be comforting. Whatever the tone of the sea, the colour of the sand, the size of the waves, it is there - a constant - something craved by so many during this time. The interactions are intimate, quietly beautiful. At times I felt the sadness of people, other times the relief.
Everything will be ok in the end.
And if it’s not okay, it’s not the end.
The series was taken over a six-month period from January to June 2021 during the UK’s Covid-19 pandemic lock-down. The location is Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, from various cliff top vantage points.
Au moment où l'on demandait aux gens de s'isoler les uns des autres, je les ai vus chercher d'autres types de liens. Le littoral attire les gens. Son immensité offre la sécurité et son visage toujours changeant embrasse tous ceux qui s'y engagent. Le fait de voir ces interactions d'en haut accentue la petitesse de chacun d'entre nous dans ce monde. L’espace entre les sujets accentue la solitude ressentie par beaucoup.
Le littoral en constante évolution semble étrangement réconfortant. Quel que soit la nuance de la mer, la couleur du sable, la taille des vagues, il y a ce quelque chose en plus recherché par tant de personnes pendant cette période. Les interactions sont intimes, d'une beauté tranquille. Parfois, on croit percevoir la tristesse des gens, d'autres fois le soulagement.
Tout ira bien à la fin.
Et si ça ne va pas, ce n'est pas la fin.
La série a été prise sur une période de six mois, de janvier à juin 2021, pendant le confinement lié à la pandémie de Covid-19 au Royaume-Uni. Le lieu des prises de vue est Sandown, sur l'île de Wight, depuis différents points d'observation au sommet des falaises.
